UNU-CS at IST-Africa 2017

June 2, 2017

On 31 May – 2 June, Hannah Thinyane attended the IST-Africa 2017 Conference in Windhoek, Namibia. This conference is the twelfth in an annual series of Ministerial Level Technology Research Conferences. It brought together 190 presenters from the public, private, education and research organizations from 35 countries.

Hannah co-authored two papers at the conference, both stemming from the MobiSAM project, a five-year citizen participation project that she co-directs between the United Nations University Institute on Computing and Society (UNU-CS) and Rhodes University in South Africa. One of the papers provided an evaluation of the MobiSAM mobile visualization system, highlighting a series of user evaluations and subsequent redesigns and developments of the mobile application. The second paper discussed the use of sentiment analysis and topic modeling to understand the online communicative ecologies of community members in Makana Municipality, South Africa.
