Strengthening UNU-CS – KAIST Cooperation

August 11, 2017

Following on the series of joint activities between the United Nations University Institute on Computing and Society (UNU-CS) and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), UNU-CS Principal Research Fellow Araba Sey visited the KAIST Graduate School of Science and Technology Policy in South Korea. The visit included a set of activities to continue partnership building and cooperation deepening, including meetings with the director of the Global Information & Telecommunication Technology Program (Jae Jeung Rho), as well as some staff and mid-career students of the program.

In addition, Araba was a speaker at a seminar on Gender Technology from a Life Course Perspective, organized by Moon Choi – founder of the Aging and Technology Policy Lab at KAIST. Araba’s talk discussed issues around public access to information and communication technologies (ICTs) from a gender perspective, drawing on the results of the Global Impact Study, which explored the uses and impacts of public access to ICTs in eight countries. The topics highlighted during the seminar triggered discussions among speakers and participants about a wide range of ideas including finding new ways to measure digital divides with respect to gender, feeding new scientific knowledge into the public sphere (for example, knowledge that debunks gender stereotypes), and investigating the role of social factors in perpetuating gender gaps.
