On Monday, 05 September 2016, Derval Usher, Head of Office at Pulse Lab Jakarta – one of the labs of the United Nations Global Pulse innovation initiative – visited the United Nations University Institute in Macau. Miss Usher met with UNU Institute in Macau Principal Research Fellow Dr. Mamello Thinyane to discuss synergies between the work of Global Pulse in general, but specifically Global Pulse Jakarta around small data for SDG indicator monitoring. Global Pulse Lab Jakarta’s team has developed tools and platforms that contribute to identifying proxy indicators and alternative sources for SDG indicators in the context of Indonesia. The engagement with UNU Institute in Macau stands to provide further validation of the global applicability of some of these already developed tools, as well as to collaborative make further contributions to the use of crowd-sourced and citizen-generated data. This data could potentially contribute towards informing SDG indicator monitoring at both national and global level. Later, Miss Usher gathered with the UNU Institute in Macau research team to present “Taking Indonesia’s Digital Pulse”, where she described Global Pulse Jakarta’s research in: big data for development; and complementing data analytics with human-centered insights.
